Restoring 3D Measurement Control in Motorsport Aerodynamics

3D scanning technology helps motorsport teams precisely control the aerodynamic geometry of their vehicles, optimize design, shorten development time, and improve aerodynamic performance in high-performance racing programs.

When development speed is slowed by dependence on external sources

AMB Aero is a Japan-based company specializing in providing aerodynamic design services to motorsport teams and high-performance car manufacturers worldwide. The company participates in numerous racing car development programs, including CFD simulation, wind tunnel testing, 3D scanning, reverse engineering, and the development of aerodynamic kits for high-performance vehicles.

In its early stages, AMB Aero faced many difficulties due to the lack of an in-house 3D measurement system. Because of the high cost of investing in metrology equipment, the company had to rely on third-party 3D scanning services.

This dependence creates numerous limitations in project progress. Waiting times and unstable work schedules make the implementation of aerodynamic projects difficult to control.

Furthermore, measuring large vehicle structures presents many technical challenges. Accumulated deviations during measurement can lead to large errors across the entire vehicle body, making the construction of accurate symmetrical models very difficult.

Limitations of the old measurement system

Previous scanning systems often required many manual operations during data processing. Cleaning the point cloud and processing the 3D model was time-consuming, prolonging the data collection process in the field.

This was particularly inconvenient when AMB Aero worked with clients globally. The large size and weight of the measuring equipment made air transport difficult.

Unstable scan data quality also affected subsequent engineering steps. Geometric discrepancies in measurement data lead to repeated design and manufacturing processes, increasing costs and prolonging product development time.

In high-performance vehicle projects, inaccurate measurement data can have serious consequences. Small deviations in body geometry can directly affect aerodynamic performance and the assembly of components.

The Decision to Incorporate 3D Scanning Technology

After experiencing numerous projects with measurement challenges, AMB Aero decided to seek a more accurate 3D scanning solution suitable for large-scale racing car projects.

The engineering team evaluated various 3D scanning systems on the market. Their goal was to find a device with sub-millimeter accuracy, capable of collecting detailed surface data, and easy to use in a real-world work environment.

Ultimately, the company chose the HandySCAN BLACK Elite 3D scanner combined with the Creaform Metrology Suite software.

The system setup was quick. In less than two hours, the engineering team was able to begin working on real-world scanning projects. The intuitive software interface allowed engineers to quickly familiarize themselves with the equipment and deploy work on the same day.

Accurate Geometric Data Collection for Racing Cars

AMB Aero implemented a live 3D scanning project on-site for a high-performance parts manufacturer in Japan.

The project's goal was to build a basic geometric model of an existing aerodynamic unit before proceeding with performance optimization steps.

Thanks to its rapid deployment and robust design, the scanner can operate reliably in a variety of environmental conditions. The device is also easily transportable to many countries to serve international projects.

All scanned data is then transferred to the reverse engineering phase. The acquired 3D models are converted into parametric CAD models, serving aerodynamic analysis and new design development.

From Data Doubt to Absolute Reliability

After adopting the new 3D scanning technology, AMB Aero's workflow has changed significantly.

What used to take days to scan now only takes a few hours. Data accuracy has increased dramatically, halving the number of iterations in the product design and development process.

Engineers no longer have to doubt the accuracy of measurement data. When problems arise during product development, they can quickly identify the root cause without worrying about measurement errors.

Owning an in-house 3D scanning system also helps the company better control costs, project timelines, and data quality.

Expanding Racing Car Development Programs

With stronger 3D measurement capabilities, AMB Aero has been able to participate in more complex motorsport projects.

One of the company's major projects is the aerodynamic development program for the Le Mans Prototype racing car, which began in the spring of 2025 and is expected to enter production in the winter of the same year.

Simultaneously, the company is also expanding its operations into FIA-recognized Hill Climb racing programs, where aerodynamic challenges require precise measurement and analysis solutions.

Thanks to accurate measurement data and more efficient workflows, AMB Aero has solidified its position in a fiercely competitive industry.

Conclusion

In the motorsport environment, where every small detail of the car body can affect track performance, possessing accurate geometric data is crucial.

3D scanning technology helps racing teams and engineering companies better control the measurement process, thereby optimizing aerodynamic design, shortening development time, and improving vehicle performance.

Integrating 3D measurement systems in-house not only speeds up project deployment but also provides confidence in all engineering decisions based on accurate data.
